Do you often daydream about working at home? Before you hand in your letter of resignation, please read what Jan K., The Proofer has to say about the pros and cons of being your own boss. These are points to ponder before you begin your pursuit of a work-at-home job.

Working at Home Isn”t All Fun and Games

I enjoy telling people that I “work at home.” I can see that wistful look in their eyes, and I can hear it in their voices when they say, “That must be nice.” And then for about five minutes, they do a little daydreaming about what it would be like to “work at home.” I never explain to them about the measure of self-discipline it takes, and how great are the temptations to take a “break” and reorganize my sock drawer when I find myself faced with working on a project that is less than interesting (or worse yet, “not as profitable” as other projects). Why burst their bubble? Let them daydream awhile?.

There are T-Shirts and T-Shirts; funny t-shirts, cool t-shirts, those t-shirts and these t-shirts covering just about any subject on earth. But there is one t-shirt that is unique – and that is the “Designer” T-Shirt. Now, don’t for a moment think that these distinctive kind of t-shirts are a recent phenomenon. Thomas E. Dewey toyed with the “Dew-IT with Dewey” T-Shirt during his 1948 Presidential campaign and Dwight D. Eisenhower had the “I Like Ike” custom t-shirt with which he won the Presidency in 1952. These are designer t-shirts. T-shirts designed for a specific purpose at a specific time. They may have passed out of the memory of most people, but they served their purpose.

There is no hard and fast rule that designer t-shirts should be created for a sole purpose and then fade away into oblivion, but can be designed even to satisfy ones whims and fancies. It can be verbal or graphical and is left solely to the wearer’s penchant for it. It can be even used to express your particular point of view a particular subject.

The design of custom t-shirts can be said to be the offspring of one percent inspiration and ninety nine percent perspiration – to fall back on a saying attributed to Thomas Edison, the famous inventor. The idea for a particular t-shirt may spring suddenly into your mind, that’s inspiration; the rest is perspiration – hard work – hours and even days of trying to get the idea on to paper and create that perfect image. A twist of a use of a font, a color or shape.

If you spend a lot of time on the computer, or make a living on it, you must keep it organized. I compare it to a clean car inside and out. It’s work to keep it clean everyday, but knowing where your stuff is at, is a great feeling.

For example, how many times have you gone to a website that requires a login name and password? You recognize the site, but of course the user name and password that you use for everything else doesn’t work. You look around and wonder where that information is.

It’s got to be somewhere you think to yourself. You then proceed to lose 20 minutes of your time trying to find the confirmation email the site sent you six months ago. You ultimately determine the information has found the circular file.

The conception and birth of the t-shirt was a normal occurrence. Nothing complicated. It might have passed off into the history of fashion without a walk down any of the world’s long ramps had not some subsequent events taken place. But its evolution, though short like is arm is quite an interesting one. For it started on its journey to fame as a humble underwear.

It was only in the early twentieth century that the idea of wearing an under cloth germinated, and in 1901, the P.H. Hanes Knitting Company began the manufacture of men’s underwear and this apparel came into existence as an piece of underclothing hidden away under a stratum of other dresses. But its prominence is due to the issue of a piece of underwear that had no collar, with short sleeves that looked extraordinarily like a “T” (hence the name of “t-shirt”) to the sailors of the US Navy going to the World War I theater.

It was also the WWI that brought it out into the open when footage of news of the war showed the soldiers clad only in this piece of cloth, to overcome the hot and humid European type of weather. But as always its popularity was really established by Hollywood when it depicted it as a piece of clothing on its own rights. By the 1950s, the popularity of the t-shirt had skyrocketed when it was worn on the silver screen by Marlon Brando in “A Streetcar Named Desire” (1951) and then by James Dean in “Rebel Without a Cause” (1955). As more and more icons of the film industry began sporting it as a dress on its own rights the image of the t-shirt grew in stature.

Making money online is an attractive prospect and one which almost everybody wants to try their hand at. However, to have a realistic chance of succeeding, you have to learn the ins and outs of online niche marketing. The obvious question that comes to mind is why online niche marketing is preferable to targeting a broader market. There are plenty of reasons.

As a first, it is more probable that you can succeed. You are running a one man show and the market needs to be tight and small enough for you to be able to customize solutions to meet the needs of your potential customers. Also, being in a narrow market basically wipes out competition from the big boys.

The key is to build a strong customer base when employing online niche marketing strategy. You can be personal and need not resort to extreme aggressive and pushy marketing techniques. With a small market, you can add a human touch to your marketing so that they remain loyal to you. The very fact that if you do not have any competition, your customers are going to look to you as their own resource point.

1. Thorough market research is the foundation for success Meticulous market research doubles your chances of making a tidy profit from the wholesale goods you buy. Start off with a list of 5-10 different ideas. Then check completed listings searches on eBay to see what the item generally sells for and the sell-through rate for each one. Use Yahoo’s free keyword tool http://inventory.overture.com to find out how many people are searching Yahoo for your product per month. You can double this figure for Google. Add the numbers together. If there are ten thousand or more searches per month for an item, this indicates a healthy market.

2. Calculate the REAL cost of your item One big reason why people fail at the wholesale game is that they don’t do the numbers. In other words, they don’t treat wholesale like a real business. To accurately discover your true profit potential on an item, you need to add the shipping cost and insurance, eBay fees (or equivalent for other advertising), Paypal and/or credit card fees (these can be a real profit killer), packaging costs and labor involved packaging, and any storage costs to the cost of your item.

3. Verify ALL suppliers found on the Internet Getting caught out by scammers is a common stumbling block for people new to wholesale. If you are searching for suppliers off your own bat (rather than using a wholesale directory like SaleHoo), it is CRITICAL to check authenticity before making a purchase.
