Of all the things to worry about in the world, do you know what you should worry about most?

Terrorists? Armed burglars?

Whatever your top security concern is, it should be identity theft.

Here’s why:

Foreign hackers are getting better and bolder, and they are virtually immune from prosecution. They team up with individuals in this country who are desperate for money (or drugs), and they pull no punches.

My sister was a victim of identity theft, and, though it could have been worse, it took her a year and several thousand dollars to clear her name.

Can you say bankruptcy? Can you say debt? Can you say pain, suffering, anguish?

Down south they’ll tell you, “scams bring on scams”.

No doubt you’ve noticed all the identity theft protection services popping up all over the place. Lifelock, TrustedID, and so on.

Do these services actually do anything for you? We’ll talk mostly about Lifelock here. It’s the biggest one. Does it really help?

Here’s a concern. Maybe they don’t really do anything to secure your identity. Maybe they just get a whole bunch of people to buy in, and then they wait for something to happen, and give limited payouts from their vast coffers.

My skepticism was shown to be misleading in this case. Lifelock actually does a lot for you. Here’s a rundown of some of the highlights:

First, Lifelock issues a fraud check for your account with the credit bureaus. They do this every 90 days.

Second, every year LifeLock makes sure you get a complete credit report.

Third, they have a $1,000,000 guarantee. If you suffer losses due to identity abuse, they will help you recover financially.

Fourth, Lifelock removes one of the hackers’ top tricks by getting your name off of the lists of credit card companies sending you pre-approved offers.

Fifth, Lifelock will fight for you. They have lawyers. And these lawyers will help you out of messes other people get you into in your name.

In the end I find myself recommending Lifelock and other identity protection systems. They should help you rest easy knowing that they will prevent much identity theft, and be there for you in case something does happen.

Get Lifelock (or another product like TrustedID). You’ll be glad you did.
