And advertisers do not need to spend a buck if the publisher cannot perform as well as it should be performing.

In order to count the number of visitors, the idea of unique visitor will usually be adapted. And the notion of unique is mainly in connection with IPs. The advertisers will count the number of unique IPs to access the performance of the publishers. Of course there are also advertisers which will paid according to the number of impressions. But the price for each impression will be a lot lower than the price for each referral visit.

There is another mode of affiliate marketing. Under this mode the advertiser will pay if some follows the links from the publishers and make some purchases. However, without any surprise, this will be more difficult for the publisher to make money.

Affiliate marketing becomes extremely popular in recent years since both the advertisers and publishers can earn and make money from it. And it is expected that it will still be the most popular way of online advertising in the future.
